The specs are still changing, but in theory, this means you can charge a USB-C phone with another USB-C phone. This also give many options for external phone peripherals such as optical mice, external storage, camera flashes, and many other accessories that require extra power. Not only are both ends of the USB-C cable the same, there is no up-side-down. You can connect either end to any device with either side up.

Standard turnaround on a custom shaped power bank tends to be in the 2 ½ to 3 week range but on this project we were on a tight deadline. Thanks to the cooperation of our partners at Unite Eurotherapy and our talented design staff we were provided with high quality imaging that made it possible to go from an initial product render to order placement. We were able, also, to complete production of these chargers in only 6 calendar days.

The final product turned out just as highly detailed and sharp and the 3D render we provided our client. Both Unite and the office staff at USB Promos were excited to receive the finished products and we were not disappointed. We look forward to working with our partners at Unite Eurotherapy on future USB projects.

In order to make this possible, they sent us samples of the product they wanted us to clone so we could get the intricate details down. We worked hand in hand with them to get the replication of their product as true to form as possible.

The Challenge:

Creating imprinted power banks with a specialized logo within a small window of time and at a fair price.

Our Strategy:

DeWalt contacted USB Promos on a Friday afternoon inquiring about the pricing and a design idea for one of our power banks, model PB-12507, for an event they were hosting. It just so happens that the head of our sales department used to work in construction and keeps a DeWalt cordless hammer drill on his desk, not only providing him with valuable knowledge about the company’s products, but also a great deal of enthusiasm.

The same afternoon the USB Promos team received the initial call, we were able to make a mock-up of the DeWalt design, get approval, and solidify the order.

The Cool Details:

We have a diverse team of people working at USB Promos and their expansive knowledge often allows them to interact with our customers on a deep level of understanding, not only of their brands’ promotional goals, but also of their products. The head of our sales department was able to create a connection with the DeWalt representative immediately and understand what they were looking for from the USB Promos team.

This knowledge facilitated the speed of the order. From initial contact, to the mock-up, to approval, to the finalizing details, the whole process took about 2 hours, which allowed the manufacturing to almost immediately.

The power banks, model PB-12507, are customizable to reflect the customer’s design needs. The DeWalt power banks were designed with the company’s logo colors: black for the body of the power bank and orange for the lettering. Also imprinted on the power banks was DeWalt’s specialized SDS rotary hammer logo.

Additionally, the USB Promos team was the only company DeWalt spoke to that was able to make the quick turnaround time for their event, and we also happened to have the most competitive pricing.

End Results:

DeWalt ordered 260 of our power banks with 2600mAh capacity. The power banks were imprinted with the company’s name as well as their specialized SDS rotary hammer logo.

The knowledge of the customer’s products amongst our staff aided our understanding of their design needs for their power banks and facilitated an incredibly quick ordering process as well as a fast total turnaround time.

The diversity of our team’s knowledge means that we are often able to jump into a project already with a basic understanding of our customers’ products and promotional needs.

DeWalt’s final product turned out looking sharp. The power banks were delivered on time for the event, despite the quick turnaround time. Additionally, they were sold not only at a fair price, but at the most competitive price the customer had come across.

Sony Playstation

The Challenge:

To design and produce custom USB drives mimicking Sony Playstation’s PS4 game controller for an internal giveaway at the company.

Our Strategy:

Sony Playstation came to USB Promos with an inquiry about designing custom USB drives in the shape of their PS4 game controller. They wanted the product for an internal giveaway to their development team at Sony Playstation Vue.

Our design team’s first step was to go out and buy an actual controller at the local GameStop so they could study the product. This is a strategy they often employ when a customer requests a custom USB drive in the shape of one of their products and it usually garners great results.

The team brought back a design for the USB drives that when set side-by-side with the real product looks almost identical. After receiving approval for their design idea the USB Promos team set about creating the controller-shaped USB drives.

The Cool Details:

To bring the USB drives to life the team used a real PS4 controller for inspiration. Once the design was set, Sony Playstation opted to order the majority of the USB drives in black, while a smaller number were to be made gold.

The black controller-shaped USB drives were created using black PVC. The gold ones, on the other hand, were manufactured using metallic PVC. The coloring of the buttons and the small nuances of the USB drives were modeled after the real life controller we had in-house.

Finally, the customer opted to have their USB drives housed in custom imprinted packaging. The last step of the creation and manufacturing process was to create these customized imprinted packages in black to store the controller-shaped USB drives.

End Results:

The USB Promos team wanted to make the representation of the controllers as accurate as possible, particularly because the USB drives were for an internal giveaway. To achieve this they utilized the real product as a model during the design process.

The customer ordered 450 controller-shaped USB drives in black and another 50 in gold. Employing different materials to reflect the desired colors we were able to create 500 stellar representations of the PS4 controllers in USB drive form. We then created custom packaging for the drives developed not only to protect them, but also to represent the customer’s brand. The USB drives were packaged in an imprinted black protective shell for the giveaway that looked great and represented the brand.

The Company:

Rapala

The Challenge:

Crafting a custom USB drive modeled on the Scatter Rap fishing lure produced by Rapala.

Our Strategy:

Rapala’s Scatter Rap lure is shaped and colored to look and move like a small fish. In order to create a USB drive design that was as accurate as possible, Rapala sent us one of the Scatter Rap lures to study. While studying the lure, our design team came up with and pitched an idea we have never tried before: incorporating a piece of the actual product into the USB drives.

The Scatter Rap has a small piece of plastic shaped a bit like a potato chip called the Scatter Lip. The plastic piece protrudes from one end of the lure (the end with the mouth of the fish) and helps control the lure’s movement. The design team decided that they could incorporate this plastic piece into the design of the USB drives to make them even more accurate.

After receiving approval of this unique idea we were able to begin bringing the idea to fruition with quite a bit of help from Rapala.

The Cool Details:

This project turned into a very collaborative effort between Rapala and the USB Promos team. Rapala shipped a few thousand of the plastic pieces to us to use in the USB drives, provided additional samples of the lure, and several high-quality images to give us a strong basis for our design.

The USB Promos team took the samples and the plastic pieces and produced a final product that was not only a close representation of the lure, but also included an actual piece of the lure making it extra special for both our team and for the customer.

End Results:

Since the USB Promos team decided to incorporate a piece of Rapala’s actual product in the design we worked with them closely to make sure the piece was used properly and the design was successful. It was a real team effort.

Rapala was so impressed with the concept for the lure USB drives that they increased their original order quantity from 1000 USB drives to 2300.

Later, Rapala returned to us to order an additional 1400 custom shaped USB drives in a different shape with equal success.

Between our design team’s effort and the collaborative efforts of the customer we were able to produce a product that not only turned out looking great, but also had an unique design element that made it special both to our team and to our customer.

The Company:

Oxley Gin - a Bacardi owned brand

The Challenge:

Designing a custom USB drive that imitated the Oxley Gin bottle and preloading it with customer content to send directly to an Oxley Gin event.

Our Strategy:

Oxley Gin came to USB Promos with a design idea: they wanted a replica of their Gin bottle in USB form. Our team’s first step was to go out and purchase a bottle of the gin, a strategy we often employ when designing a USB drive modeled on a customer’s product.

The same day Oxley Gin made their first inquiry, the team took a trip to the liquor store and purchased a bottle to use as a model.

With speed and accuracy our design team created a rendering of the proposed USB drive and sent an image of the rendering next to the real product to customer that same afternoon. Not only was the fast turnaround time impressive, the rendering itself was incredibly accurate when set side-by-side with the real product.

Once the team got approval of the design idea we set about bringing it to life. In order to do that we used custom pieces to make it as accurate a representation as possible.

The Cool Details:

Since the design for the custom USB drives was based on Oxley Gin’s product the USB Promos team wanted to get it as close to the real thing as possible. To do that we ended up including unusual and custom pieces to make the USB drives look like mini-bottles of Oxley Gin.

First, we wanted to get the glass part of the bottle right. To create a glass-like effect we used translucent PVC for the main body of the bottle.

Next, we tackled the bottom of the bottle, which, for Oxley Gin, is a steel cup that caps the glass on the bottom. It’s one of the most unique and interesting design aspects of the bottle so we wanted to be sure to make it look just as good in our representation. In order to do that we manufactured custom aluminum caps for the bottoms of our USB drives.

To place the company’s name on the USB drives we created custom paper labels, which were almost exact replicas of those on the real bottles, to adhere to the PVC.

Finally, as the finishing touch, we attached cell phone charms to the tops of the USB drives to emulate the hanging ornament on Oxley Gin, completing the nearly identical bottles.

End Results:

We created 1000 USB drives in the shape of Oxley Gin bottles, preloaded them with the content that the customer provided, and shipped the USB drives directly to an event in New Orleans. From start to finish we were able to provide exactly what our client was looking for with astounding accuracy, speed, and convenience.

Some of Chinese factories and our competitors were caught passing off less than quality products as superior technology in the news. If you are shopping around the promotional industry for your next powerbank charger, please be cautious. We have put together a short list to help you get the return on investment you deserve.

1)     Be wary of internet stores and sellers with unbranded banks. Many claim to have power banks with abnormally high charge rate capacities i.e. 12000mAh-20000mAh or higher. Those false claims coupled with a very cheap price tag and absent branding should serve as an immediate alert to be wary. Quick rule of thumb: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Stay away from these type of sellers.

2)     Some power banks made in Shenzen factories offer high capacities with low minimum quantities for low prices. Be extremely cautious if you can buy less than 10 chargers for a few bucks a pop. You may fall victim like a Taiwanese gentleman who received an unbelievable deal for a powerbank with a supposed “24,000mAh charge capacity” that ended up faulty and filled with sand.

3)     If you receive your brandless powerbank(s) and even one looks like the following picture-  return to sender. Notice that there are a variety of batteries used. This is not only poor quality, but also dangerous to you/your technology.

The batteries were not produced in the same batch, hence the different colors. Using a variety of batteries means they are probably recycled, broke placeholders and/or putting out not even ⅓ of the charge they should. The most dangerous part about using non compatible batteries is the chance of unstable currents. This could result in charging/discharging issues for your technology like draining the battery or frying the technology. Invest the extra money for a guaranteed, high quality powerbank and save yourself the trouble.

4)      Another issue and a far more dangerous side effect is the probability of explosions. Power banks can explode when battery cells are mixed. Short-circuiting results in periods of higher and non-regulated battery temperatures that heat up the inside liquid and water which turns into gas. The high temperature and the gas can easily cause an explosion as seen in the following picture.

While it’s important to recognize what to look for in a low quality and dangerous power bank, it’s equally important to know what a proper charger looks like.

If you are planning or shopping around the market for a powerbank, be especially cautious. Working with this client provided a fantastic challenge for our graphic design team. We were presented with the challenge to either produce a typical USB drive with a logo printed onto it, or we could create a one-of-a-kind custom USB. We successfully completed a custom shape that replicated one of the client’s toasters.

The custom mold was made out of rubber PVC. The USB itself was molded to mimic two pieces of toast that can be taken out of the toaster and plugged into a port. It was built to be sleek, sturdy, and simple, just like the client’s products. In the end, the USB Promos team satisfied not only its client, but ourselves.

With your representative, you will conceptualize what your future promotional tool will look like by sending him/her a  general idea, rough sketch, complete rendering or a physical product.

The prototype is used to create a mold cast that is specific to your order. Typically, there is a fee to do this because it’s an intensive process and no other company can use your mold. Once your mold is created, our production facility will create and assemble your custom shape USB drives. The entire process should take about 3-4 weeks, However, the quicker details are finalized, the sooner your order will be completed.

However,  only some of our drives can be considered “greener technology,” like our wood drives. All of our wood models can be customized by choosing a wood specie. We offer wood models in recycled wood, bamboo, cork, maple, walnut, beechwood and rosewood.

Sometimes clients hesitate in making the switch from traditional plastic/metal USB drives to wood. Typically, it is because they were not aware that wood drives receive the same customization process.

Instead of choosing a color for a plastic USB, the client would instead choose a wood specie for the model of their choice. The next step would be branding the USB. Many clients are unaware that our wood models, too, can be branded. We offer the same processes as traditional materials including CMYK print, screen print and laser etch.

Another important detail to consider when ordering USB drives is that you essentially have the power to use a more eco-friendly drive, a greener technology. After the life of the drive is reached, give or take 10 years, all of our wood models are 100% recyclable. Any metal/plastic attachments- as seen in the swivel clip model above- can be separated and recycled. The memory itself will be detached from the wood casing and shredded. Any precious metals, like copper, within the memory will be recovered through smelting and recycled.

A couple of our wood models are actually already made out of 100% recycled stock. There is a smaller rounded stick drive and credit card style. We also offer bamboo models because bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Therefore, clients can feel better about choosing a wood specie.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a slideshow should leave you speechless. Photos are a top pick to preload. Our client, Gobain, does just that. They produce a particular type of glass that holds up to all of those standards for the military. Holding themselves to those standards, they also hold others to the same.

Gobain contacted us in the past to produce custom shaped USB drives for them. That order was for mini replicas of rocket launchers.

As Gobain was very happy with our product, they recently reached out and placed another order for these fighter jets.

In both cases, the USB drives were made out of rubber 3D PVC. Custom molds were created for each drive and can only be used by Gobain in the future. The drives were used as a marketing tool for the company.

This summer we worked hand in hand with Kia to produce a custom shaped USB drive. The drive was designed to look like a miniature replica of their new vehicle, the Kia Soul.

Kia used the mini Soul USB drive as a promotional tool. Each drive was built to function as a flash drive with storage space. However, Kia added to the ‘promotional’ factor of the drive by transforming it into a digital press/media kit.

Kia provided USB Promos with the data they wanted on the drives. We then pre-loaded every drive with that data.

Also, they chose to include a few free songs that helped further the Kia Soul experience.

Paper web keys are not built to store extensive data like a traditional USB drive. Rather, they have the capability to be programmed with specific web page URL information. The webkey, once plugged into a computer, automatically directs the customer to the web site that you want them to view.

For instance, pharmaceutical companies can design the web key packaging like a brochure to market a new product. The information might include name of product, pictures and benefits of use. The following image is of the final prototype. The document is always sent to the client like this  It should include the business name, basic outline, prototype to be sent to production and pantone CMYK colors to be used for exact replication.

Once the artwork was approved by Jergens it was sent to production. The final product was made out of custom rubber PVC 3D. After three weeks, this is the final product (front) with actual Jergens Natural Glow lotion (back).

Fort Myers PD came to USB Promos in need of a custom 2D squad car. They wanted the squad car and attached badge to be replicated from their own. Our highly skilled graphic designer took the time to sketch out a design and then created a 2D prototype within 24-hours. Once it was client approved, we sent the design to production. The final products, squad car and badge, were made out of our flexible rubber PVC. We also offer metal, ABS plastic, 3D PVC and wooden drives that can be customized as well.

We believe that the process should be as simple as possible from the start. Therefore, once a client has decided on a product they would like customized they can present the idea to our sales team through  e-mail, our online chat system or by phone. The sales team will help gather the details of the order including what type of material the drive will be made with: 2D rubber PVC, 3D rubber PVC, ABS plastic, metal, epoxy dome, etc. Together, they will also decide if any accessories are needed for the drive like the more popular ball and chain, keychains and PVC tags.

The order is then given to our graphic design team who furthers the process by designing a digital mock up of the drive. The design team will respond in less than 24-hours with the initial 3D design.

We also have the ability to create a 3D printed prototype which can then be sent to the client by the next business day. After the client has seen and approved the final prototype, the design is sent to production.

Production begins with creating a custom mold for the product and then producing the order. There is a minimum requirement of 100 USB drives per order. The products are then shipped to the client within 3 ½ weeks.

This year USB Promos has had a lot to be thankful for. From the expansion of our product line to new team members— we wouldn't be in the place we are without our clients.

While 2014  has one more month to go, USB Promos already has a lot to be thankful for. The new 3D rubber PVC products brought more business than ever before and helped our clients to market themselves in new ways.

The USB Promos team was able to grow this year as well. With business booming, we were able to create new positions and bring on more creative geniuses to better serve our clients.

This year USB Promos has had a lot to be thankful for. From the expansion of our product line to new team members— we wouldn't be in the place we are without our clients.

While 2014  has one more month to go, USB Promos already has a lot to be thankful for. We were able to expand our creative product lines and offer custom standard and 3D equivalent retractable phone cables, wall plug chargers and power banks. The new 3D rubber PVC products brought more business than ever before and helped our clients to market themselves in new ways.

The USB Promos team was able to grow this year as well. With business booming, we were able to create new positions and bring on more creative geniuses to better serve our clients.

One of the benefits we are experiencing from our growing team is the progress of launching a new website and a new product line at our first tradeshow. We hope to provide quality promotional tools to a larger audience in the new year and are grateful for the opportunity to do so.
